Choosing the right spiral staircase size is one of the most critical decisions in your project. Pick too small and it feels cramped and unsafe; pick too large and it overwhelms the space. Based on hundreds of factory installations, we compare the two most common residential spiral staircase configurations below.
These two designs are the most common in home decoration cases, so it helps to compare them side by side.
Design A: Compact 1.7 m Opening
The first configuration covers an opening of approximately 1.7 meters square, with a walking surface of 70 centimeters. This is the minimum size that feels comfortable for daily use in a residential setting.
- Best for: Lofts, retrofits, small apartments, attics
- Tread type: Hollowed-out / open treads reduce visual weight and lighten the space
- Center column: A round pipe column is the only practical shape at this diameter — a closed steel-plate circle would be too heavy and visually bulky
- Load capacity: Standard residential use, typically rated for 200 kg per step
Design B: Spacious 2.2 m Opening
The second configuration covers an opening of approximately 2.2 meters, with a walking surface of 90 centimeters. This is the size you choose when you want the staircase to feel like a designed feature, not a compromise.
- Best for: Villas, double-height lobbies, commercial spaces, feature staircases
- Tread type: Closed treads in steel plate — the larger diameter lets you use a full circular plate construction instead of a simple pipe
- Center column: Can be fabricated as a solid circular steel stringer with glass or steel balustrade
- Load capacity: Can be engineered for higher commercial loads on request
How to Choose
If your floor opening is 1.6–1.9 m: Go with Design A. Hollowed treads and a round-pipe column keep the visual footprint light. Don't try to force a closed-plate design into a small opening — it will feel heavy and dark.
If your floor opening is 2.0–2.4 m or larger: Go with Design B. The extra diameter lets you use closed steel treads, which read as more premium and durable. This is where you can start adding glass balustrades, wood tread caps, or custom finishes.
