5.3m Double Spiral Steel Staircase: Technical Specs and Design Breakdown

A 5.3-meter double spiral steel staircase is one of the most technically demanding products in custom staircase manufacturing. This type of staircase uses two intertwined helical stringers to create a compact, sculptural circulation path that fits beautifully in villas, double-height lobbies, and commercial atriums. In this article, we break down the engineering behind a recently completed 5.3m double spiral project, including the structural specs, fabrication process, and installation challenges.

Project Specifications

The client requested a double spiral staircase spanning a total floor-to-floor height of 5.3 meters. The design needed to accommodate 31 steps with a comfortable going depth, all within a circular footprint of approximately 2.2 meters in diameter.

Parameter Specification
Total rise 5,300 mm
Number of steps 31
Riser height 170 mm
Stringer configuration Double helical, 8+8 mm steel plate
Tread thickness 5 mm steel plate with anti-slip finish
Diameter ~2,200 mm
Finish Powder-coated matte black

Why Double Stringers? The Structural Logic

A single helical stringer can handle residential loads, but a 5.3m height with 31 steps creates significant torsional stress. That is why we specify a double stringer system — two parallel steel plates bent into the same helical curve, welded together at intervals. This arrangement distributes the vertical load across two structural paths, reducing deflection to less than L/360 and eliminating the wobble commonly felt on under-engineered spiral stairs.

Each stringer is laser-cut from 8mm thick Q235 carbon steel plate. The two plates are then cold-rolled into the helical profile using a 9-axis rolling machine. Precision at this stage is critical: a tolerance of more than 1.5 mm across the 5.3m length would make the treads misalign on site.

Tread Design and Anti-Slip Detail

The treads are fabricated from 5mm steel plate, cut to a pie-slice shape that matches the helical stringer geometry. Each tread is welded to both stringers and then finished with a serrated anti-slip surface — essential for both residential and commercial use. The 170mm riser height falls within the EN 14122 and building code limits for private stairs, making this design compliant for villa applications in Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia.

Factory Prefabrication and On-Site Installation

Every section of this staircase was fully fabricated in our Foshan factory before shipment. The double spiral was divided into three transportable modules, each bolted at factory-precision interfaces. On site, the modules were stacked, aligned, and bolted together — no field welding was required. This modular approach cut the installation time to just two days for a team of three technicians.

For overseas clients, we provide complete installation drawings, a step-by-step video guide, and remote technical supervision via WhatsApp or video call. The staircase can be shipped flat-packed in a custom crate, with all bolts, finish details, and anchor plates included.

Is a Double Spiral Right for Your Project?

Double spiral steel staircases are ideal when:

  • You need to maximize floor area while making a design statement
  • The floor-to-floor height exceeds 4 meters (a single stringer may not be sufficient)
  • The staircase will carry moderate commercial traffic
  • You want a sculptural, architecturally distinctive centerpiece

For smaller spaces under 3.5m height, a single stringer spiral staircase may be more cost-effective. Our engineering team can assess your drawings and recommend the optimal structural configuration.
